To DataCore, it means the establishment of an externalized, software-based abstraction layer above the physical storage layer that is used to provide flexible provisioning of storage to applications.  DataCore invented thin provisioning and deploys it in a manner that makes more sense to me than doing it on each isolated box.  The abstraction layer also provides a great platform for hosting other functions touted as “value add” by array manufacturers permitting their use across heterogeneous boxes without the additional cost or complexity associated with implementation on physical array controllers.
